Current Solar Installations

Our region has seen tremendous growth in solar installations over the past decade. As of 2022, there are an estimated XXXX solar installations in the region, accounting for about XXX megawatts (MW) of solar capacity. Ten years ago in 2012, there were only about XXX solar installations in the region, so we’ve seen more than 10X growth over the last decade.

Solar capacity in our region has been growing at an average annual rate of around XX% per year. In 2021 alone, approximately XXX MW of new solar capacity was installed, which represents a X% increase over the prior year. The growth has been driven by declining solar panel costs as well as supportive policies and incentives at both the state and local level.

Residential rooftop solar accounts for about XX% of the total solar capacity in our region. However, large-scale solar farms are becoming increasingly common, providing clean power to utilities. Some of the largest solar installations in our region include the XXX MW solar farm in City and the XXX MW facility located in Town. With solar costs continuing to fall, growth is expected to continue strong in the coming years.

Home solar typically consists of photovoltaic solar panels, an inverter to convert the DC electricity to AC, as well as wiring and mounting equipment. The average residential solar system size in this region is between 5-8kW which can offset 50-90% of a typical home’s electric usage.

The largest completed project is the 50 MW Sunny Solar Farm located just outside of Townsville. It was completed in 2020 and provides enough electricity for over 10,000 homes. There are also two projects currently under construction – the 100 MW Desert Solar Project near Redsville and the 75 MW Blue Sky Solar Farm near Lakeview.

Several other large-scale solar farms have been proposed in our area as well. ACME Solar is seeking approval to build a 150 MW system east of Capital City. This $200 million project could break ground as early as next year if approved. Overall, our region has the potential for at least 1,000 MW of utility-scale solar development over the next decade. This build out would bring substantial economic benefits in terms of investment, tax revenue, and jobs.
